Honoring Military Women
On January 9, 2002, Marine Sgt. Jeanette L. Winters, 25,  became the first US military woman to be killed in action in Operation Enduring Freedom.  Sgt. Winters, a radio operator,  was one of seven Marines aboard a Marine Corps KC-130 military refueling plane that crashed into a mountainside as it prepared to land at an operating base in western Pakistan.  All seven aboard died and were from the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, north of San Diego, CA.  Witnesses said the plane appeared to be on fire on it's final approach prior to the crash.  Sgt. Winters of Gary, Indiana/DuPage, Illinois also has a brother who is a Marine Corps Sergeant.

In October 2000, the USS Cole, one of the world's most sophisticated guided missle destroyers was attacked in the Port of Aden, Yemen while on a refueling stop.  There were many casualties aboard the ship nicknamed the "Determined Warrior", among them were two Navy enlisted women, Lakeina Francis and Lakiba Palmer.  Lakeina Francis was a 19 year old Seaman Mess Management Specialist.   Her father, Ronald, is a retired Navy chief of 24 years.  At 22 years old, Lakiba Palmer was a Seaman recruit who had been in the Navy for 3 years.  Our condolences to their families.
